Addressing residents at Jevanjee gardens in Kikuyu town  on Friday, Ichung'wa said that many people have not registered as voters.

He said that the extension will enable those who were not able to get opportunity to register.

“The IEBC should consider extending the voter registration exercise to allow every eligible Kenyan to register as a voter,” he said.

Ichung'wa noted that the time allocated for the exercise was short and that with the low turnout experienced it will be necessary for the polls agency to extend the period.

The Kikuyu MP appealed to residents to use the remaining time to register as voters. The 30-day voter registration exercise being conducted by IEBC will end on Tuesday.

The electoral commission last week through its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ezra Chiloba ruled out extending the period.

The commission also said its target to register four million news voters is likely not to be reached following low turnout in the one month exercise.

A section of leaders have been urging the commission to extend the voter registration period with some accusing the commission of failing to sensitize Kenyans on the exercise.

The commission was targeting to register four million voters in readiness for the 2017 general elections.
