With devolution system of governance now in its third year, many county governments have seemingly not adopted austerity measures and extravagance has continued to pin down our economy.
Lake View ward MCA Simon Wanango Wednesday made what can only be described as a well thought out call to Nakuru County government to reduce its spending and channell the monies to paying contractors and its casual labourers.
The MCA said so much money is being spent in fuelling vehicles for county executives who have about three or four in one department, and never car pool: Everyone goes in his/her own car.
And this got many people lamenting just how extravagant the county government is.
If a minister is attending a certain event together with his director, why should they travel in separate cars yet they are heading to the same destination?
There are some contractors who have laid off their work waiting for payment to be made by the county government before they resume.
The money used to run the fuel-guzzlers can be channelled towards paying them and most importantly, pay casual workers in Nakuru who are reeling in debts as they have not been paid their salaries for two months.
Nakuru is not the only county that is grappling with extravagance.
There are many more and something has to be done to stop wastage of public funds.
Key development projects have ground to a halt due to alleged lack of funds to pay but it all about placement of priorities.
Keep your priorities right and we will see the county grow!
