We might assume that the current rerun on October 26 is only geared towards choosing a president from 2017 to 2022.
What lies beneath the hullabaloo, is that the same rerun has provided a platform for those eyeing the presidency from 2022 and beyond.
The most obvious on the list is our current VP, Hon. Ruto. He knows for a fact, that if President Uhuru is reelected, it is smooth sailing at the ballot in 2022. I believe our current President will return the favor and campaign for him in his strongholds and around the country.
After the August 8th poll, we had Hon. Joho and Hon. Kingi who declared their intentions for 2022 immediately after being declared winners of their respective gubernatorial races. However, Joho is seen as the de facto political heir to Raila. We therefore wonder how he will groom and prove himself worthy of the 6 million plus voters loyal to NASA.
One candidate that many have ignored is the outgoing Governor of Nairobi, Dr. Evans Kidero. If he plays his cards right, he is poised to take the role of regional leader of the Western block of voters. What he lacks is an endorsement from Raila.
Another person many underestimate is Hon. Sonko. His performance as governor of Nairobi for the next 5 years can springboard him to the national arena come 2022. Many thought his run for Nairobi governor would fail, but the man with roots from Eastlands kept trodding and eventually won the seat.
In summary, many will be eyeing the next political seat up the ladder...and they will attempt to prove their worth to their parties as we head to October.
