Religious faithfuls from the Christian and Muslim fraternity in Kibera constituency on Saturday, came together to showcase their unity in diversity.
The believers drawn from various churches and mosques launched their peace sensitisation initiative by conducting a painting exercise at the Jeddah Mosque Kambi and ACK church, all in Makina Ward.
Motivated by past incidents of violence in the area, the participants expressed their commitment to preaching peace and strengthening religious interdependence between Christian and Muslim believers in their local residential areas.
The Weekend initiative has since been applauded by many including the area legislator, Ken Okoth.
"I want to sincerely thank all the Muslim and Christian believers who participated in the painting of Jeddah Mosque Kambi and the ACK church in Makina Ward.
‘‘Indeed we are all one human family under God spreading peace, love and tolerance through interfaith initiatives,’’ said Okoth.
Other area residents also applauded the initiative noting that it was the beginning of new things in the slum.
"Kibera being a cosmopolitan area, there are a number of religious denominations exercising their faiths and so was the need to ensure interdenominational coexistence," stated Eliud Wanyonyi, a resident of Makina.
It should be noted that Kibera is one of the most volatile areas in Nairobi as witnessed in the 2007/2008 post-election violence and also during the just suspended anti-IEBC demonstrations by the opposition.
