The Media Council of Kenya Chief Executive officer David Omwoyo has issued a stern warning on people masquerading as journalists and to colleges teaching journalism without proper accreditation.
Speaking in a media literacy forum with journalists in Eldoret town and Civil Societies, Omwoyo said: "if you are practicing journalism without accreditation your days are numbered".
“The days are gone when everyone says he/she is a journalist, your days are numbered, we want every journalist to be accredited,” said Omwoyo.
He further noted that as the council, they will be rolling out an inspection in colleges and those that will not align with regulations prescribed will not be allowed to offer any journalism course.
“We will be doing an inspection in colleges to ascertain those who have proper regulation as prescribed by the council, if we find that some colleges have not yet adhered to regulations we are going to shut down, there are some which we are going to serve them with letters not to offer journalism courses soon,” he added.
The MCK boss further said they are going to have a code for those who want to join diploma courses to check and verify if that college they want to join is accredited by the council.
