Families that were displaced in Lamu following the recent terror attacks by suspected Al-Shabaab militia are now demanding compensation from the national government.

The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS) living in camps in Witu Division, have asked the government to address their plight as the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) continue with Operation Linda Boni. The demand comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a shoot to kill directive for the terrorists in the county. The families have pleaded with the government to come up with a long-term solution that will enhance security in the region.“We just want the government to compensate us for the losses we have incurred. We have lost the food that was in our farms and homes. We know things will not be the same when we go back,” said Iha Karisa, one of the displaced persons as quoted by Baraka FM.On Thursday, IDPs in Kastaka Kairu said herders and wild animals had invaded their farms after they fled following the attacks. They said the herders had taken advantage of their absence and were now grazing their animals on the farms and destroying their crops.According to Baraka FM, more than 2,000 residents have fled their homes with the most affected villages being Maleli, Kakathe, Taa and Mayumbe. Others are Nyongoro, Chumburu, Boramoyo, Pandanguo, Jima and Poromoko.
