Garissa county commissioner James Kianda has said that they have distributed non-food items to residents affected by floods.
Mr. Kianda said they distributed the items to over 2,000 displaced families from Ziwani and Bakuyu in Tana River county.
The affected families were displaced after the River Tana burst its banks following the ongoing rains which forced the families to camp at undeveloped plots next to ATC and Young Muslim Children Home within Garissa town.
Speaking after presiding over the distribution of the items by the Kenya Red Cross, which included blankets, mosquito nets, tents, bar soap, and utensils, Kianda urged the displaced families to remain in the camps until the rains subside and then be advised to go back.
The county commissioner said that the Garissa government will provide clean safe drinking water to the families and also ensure that the hygiene conditions are favorable for human inhabitation.
“The Department of Public Health in collaboration with the relevant players will provide toilets and collect garbage within these camps. They will also ensure that health needs of the people in these camps are taken care of,”
“We expect the ongoing rains to persist. We have instructed our chiefs and their assistants in areas prone to flooding to advise the residents to remain alert and be ready to move out if the need arises,” he added.
