More than 300 residents of Mkwakwani village in Ukunda are homeless. The families are spending nights in the cold after what was their homes were demolished by a private developer on Tuesday.
The affected residents said that they had lost a lot of their properties worth millions of shillings after the demolition got them unaware.They claimed that none of them was aware of the planned demolition by the private developer.
"They have taken me from something to nothing, I owned some good property but now am homeless with nothing remaining for me and my family, just the way I am, I did not manage to salvage anything from so-called house, nothing," said Mr. Ng'aro, an affected resident at Mkwakwani village, Ukunda.
"Nowadays people are not civilized at all, nobody cares about others, this is not the right way to handle such like matters, we deserve shelters like others, we were not informed of this, we just woke up and realized they were ready to bring our homes down," said Mr Hamis, a victim of the demolition, he lamented that they were not given the notice in advance.
Regardless of the residents' cries, the county commissioner, Mr. Karuku Ngumo blamed the residents that they (residents) refused to move out of the disputed piece of land, which private developer had bought rightfully, and that the private developer had acquired a court order for the same.
