Family Bank Foundation has launched a tree planting programme in Machakos County.
The foundation has stated that it intends to plant over 15,000 trees in the county.
The project geared towards improving the county's tree cover will be implemented in collaboration with the Machakos County Government.
Machakos county tree cover, for now, stands at 3.5% far much below the expected 10 percent countrywide, the initiative will ensure the percentage rises.
“We do not only do banking services to our customers but we still have social responsibilities like educating children, planting trees and many more”, Family Bank's CEO David Thuo said.
Thuo said, "as Wangari Mathai did, we must emulate in protecting the environment."
"In our corporate social responsibilities, we have 400 students countrywide with an investment of over 360 million countrywide to ensure an educated society," Thuo added.
"In addition to planting 150 trees today at Kyemutheke Polytechnic in Machakos and giving 15,000 seedlings, Family Bank has issued the institution a cheque of 200,000 to enable it plant more trees," he added.
Speaking in Machakos County on Wednesday, Governor Alfred Mutua urged the residents across the county to ensure there are trees planted in each home.
Mutua said the trees should be grown and adaptable by end of the rainy season.
The governor said he intends to plant 50 million trees in the next 5 years across Machakos town all main market centers.
