The body of a 73-year-old granny has been detained in a morgue for one year over bills estimated at around Sh1.5 million.

According to the Nairobian, Jane Wangui Mwihuri died on December 22, 2016, following a minor road accident along the Nairobi/Nakuru highway.

She died at the Mediheal Hospital, Nakuru.

The hospital which is owned by Kesses MP, Swarup Mishra where Jane was admitted for two weeks in the intensive care unit before succumbing to injuries.

The deceased’s children have allegedly tried in vain to plead with the MP to allow them to bury Jane then settle the medical bill later.

The family owes the hospital Sh1 million incurred during treatment.

Anne Wanjiru, a daughter, who spoke with The Nairobian said that the family is too poor to clear the bill at once.

The mother’s body is lying at the adjacent PNN Funeral Services. The mortuary fee as at June this year was Sh403,000.

Jane sustained head injuries as she was going to visit her elder daughter.

It is that Jane hit the rooftop of the matatu she was traveling in after the speeding vehicle ran over a road bump.

Two days after arriving at her daughter’s place, Jane started complaining of severe pain in the head. She was taken to St Mary’s Hospital and she was referred to Mediheal where it was discovered that she suffered internal head bleeding.

She was admitted to the ICU where she died two weeks later. In March, a Harambee raised Sh200,000, which was allegedly rejected by the hospital.

The family alleges that they went to Eldoret and pleaded with Mishra to take the money and allow them to take the body but he refused and demanded that we pay Sh850,000.

The family claims that the owner of the morgue was willing to waive the mortuary fee though he has firm instructions from Mediheal that the body should not leave his facility until the medical bill is cleared. The family’s wish is to bury their relative before Christmas.
