Rights Activist and former Starehe MP aspirant Boniface Mwangi said on Friday the family of the deceased is from a humble background and has no capacity to clear the hospital bill to secure the release of the body of Matilda Anyang'o.

Anyang'o died on April 12, after being admitted to the MP Shah Hospital for treatment. She had been attacked by thugs in Kangemi slums on April 11 as she returned home late in the night from work.

She is said to have been stabbed several times and was taken to the MP Shah Hospital in Parklands for treatment in critical condition.

"She was taken to MP Shah Hospital at around 9.30pm, admitted and then died the following day at 10am. MP Shah is demanding Sh858,000 from her very poor family. They have refused to release the body," Mwangi said.

Kangemi, where Anyang'o was stabbed, according to police, is classified among the most insecure slum areas of Nairobi.

Nairobi Police Commander Joseph Ole Tito recently said police are on high alert to contain rising criminality in the city.
