Benson Kariuki, Kangundo sub-county Agricultural officer says that the farmers should not repeat the same mistake they did in the previous rainy season which led to loss of seeds and lack of harvest in the region.

Speaking to farmers in Kangundo on Monday, he advised  to grow drought resistant crops that can grow in short rains and yield harvests after the rains are long-gone.

“The rains are already being witnessed and they are expected to be short rains. Farmers can still take advantage of onset rains by giving more consideration to drought resistant crops like cassava and sweet potatoes which need little water. While short rains that are received between February and May usually do not provide enough moisture for all crops, particular crops yield best at these conditions,” said Karuki.

Availability of moisture is directly related to production of crops.

Many parts of Machakos County have on Monday night received rains that include: Kangundo, Matungulu and Tala wards.
