Farmers in Machakos have been advised to embrace organic farming as a way of addressing climate change.
Speaking during the celebrations of the World Food Day in Mutituni which were organized by the Participatory Ecological Land Use Management organization (Pelum) in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, the officials said the country was facing a health crisis due to increased use of chemicals in the agriculture sector.
County Agriculture Officer Ms Margaret Kisilu and Pelum Programme Officer Ms Rosina Mbenya said growing and storing food in natural way would safeguard the health of Kenyans and ensure food security.
"We need to plant food in the natural way. As a Ministry, we will tell you the truth but it is the farmer who will decide on the best farming method," said Ms Kisilu.
She told the residents to seeks advice from Agriculture officers.
Ms Kisilu said the met department had warned of scant rainfall in the November-December season and urged farmers to grow drought-resistant crops.
Ms Mbenya urged farmers to use natural methods in preservation of their farm produce.
The participants had a procession in Mutituni market and were later given tips by agriculture officials.
The World Food Day is marked on October 16 every year.
