Farmers in Kiambu Sub-County have been encouraged to grow napier grass in plenty as a way of ensuring that they have regular fodder for their livestock.
Speaking in his Kiambu Town office on Monday, Kiambu Sub-County livestock officer Eustus Mureithi said that napier grass contains complete nutrients and was easy to grow.
"Napier grass remains the most reliable fodder for farmers who want to carry out dairy farming. I would urge all farmers who have idle land to instead use it to grow napier grass to ensure the grass is in regular supply,” said Mureithi.
He noted that farmers who grow the grass in excess can always use it to earn income by selling it to other farmers.
Mureithi at the same time cautioned farmers against leaving the napier grass to overgrow saying it would not be good for the livestock.
"Napier grass is suitable when it has grown to size. At this time it is high in nutrients and forage required by milk producing livestock,” he said.
