Farmers in Kisumu County have been advised to stop relying on rice farming only but also plant alternative crops.
Lydia Odhiambo, a nominated MCA from Kisumu County, said that most farmers usually rely on rice farming which is not as profitable as it used to be.
Speaking on Wednesday outside the assembly building, Odhiambo urged the farmers from the county to start venturing into aquaculture, dairy, cotton, horticulture and also cereals.
"We need to ensure that we embrace all the modern methods of farming to boost our income. I also ask the farmers to avoid relying on maize, sugar and rice since they are not as profitable as they used to be,” Odhiambo said.
She added: "The county government is planning on starting education workshops in all sub counties to equip farmers with knowledge on modern farming methods and techniques. The farmers need to move with the time to increase productivity.”
She also urged all leaders within the county to ensure that they give support to the farmers since farming was important to the development of the county.
"We should avoid neglecting our farmers and we should go ahead and give them support whenever possible. I advise the farmers to also seek funds aimed at helping them in various ways. There are a number of loans that are being given to farmers and farmers should grab this opportunity and apply for them,” Odhiambo said.
