Thomas Omondi, a farmer from Kisumu North Ward, said that there is shortage of seeds, fertilisers and other planting materials hence the appeal.

“Farmers may not realise maximum utilisation of the rain season if they are not given planting materials in time by the ministries concerned,” he said.

Speaking to this writer, Omondi said that Kisumu County has tracts of fertile lands capable of feeding the whole region in case of food shortage.

He urged those concerned with the agricultural sector to put measures of boosting crop production.

Omondi has also advised farmers to get involved in cultivation of variety of crops in order to earn decent living as farmers.

He added that over the past years, farmers within Kisumu County have put much effort in rice farming which he said cannot give them maximum output as before.

“Try to plant other crops like maize, sorghum, millet and horticulture which are capable of rewarding you abundantly. Do not be over dependent on rice growing. Its value has gone down,” he said.
