They have instead been asked to substitute maize with other crops like potatoes and cassava among others. This follows a wide scale maize failure last season due to a maize disease (MNLD) that left many farmers without harvest.

Nakuru county Agricultural Special Projects officer Jane Njeri has discouraged the planting of maize and asked farmers to form groups so that they can start receiving lessons on good farming practices.

“Farmers need to have common interest groups so that our extension officers and other experts we bring along will be able to reach many farmers at once,” Njeri told the press in Nakuru town yesterday.

Additionally Njeri has asked farmers to incorporate good environmental practices into their farming seeing that bad weather affects them negatively.

“As you do your farming, you need to be of service to the environment so that the environment can be of service to you too,” advised Njeri.
