County Agricultural Officer Anne Okoth noted that the farmers are losing a lot of fertile soil as they are washed away by the rains leaving their farms bare.

She advised the locals to plant trees on the lower sides of their farms and not practice farming.

“You are not doing yourself a favor by planting along river banks thinking that you are utilizing every bit of your farm. You risk having your crops washed away when huge rains like what was experienced last week. The fertile soils will also be washed down the river,” She said.

She was speaking after touring various homesteads in Kisumu enlightening the locals on safe farming practices.

The Agricultural Officer asked farmers to be cautious when buying planting seeds from Agro-vets in the area citing viability.

“I know this is the planting season but be keen to buy quality hybrid seedlings. Do not store seedlings on your own but buy from certified dealers. Also check on the manufacturing dates as over-stayed seeds have low chances of germinating,” she said.
