They include farmers of vegetables, soya beans, maize, fruits, bananas, sugar cane and nipper grass.

Addressing the press at Jam City Slum along River Athi, the farmers' spokesperson Julius Mutuku said the affected farmers own farms along the river from Kasuitu Slum area to Jam City Slum.

Mr Mutuku said the farmers were in great financial problems since majority of them had borrowed loans from various micro-financial institutions to conduct aggro-business.

"I personally county a Sh500,000 loss due to the floods," said Mutuku.

He said the farmers whose crops had been swept by the flash floods were not able to service their loans, they wondered what will happen between them and their creditors.

Mutuku said the farmers depended 100 per cent on their farms to pay school fees for their children, maintain their families and run their livelihoods.

He urged the state to come to their rescue and compensate them for the loses.

"We call on the government to compensate us for the loses or give us relief until we recover from the loses," said Mutuku.

Mutuku said a number of the farmers were willing to establish businesses if they were supported to raise capital.
