The farmers accused middlemen for exploiting the prices following the good maize yields.

At Daraja Mbili market, a kilogram of maize retails at Sh45 while a sack of 90 kilogram retails between Sh2,200 and Sh 2,500.

A section of farmers are unhappy with the low maize prices.

“This is season the harvest was good but the prices dropped drastically. We have nothing to smile about. Middlemen should be barred from exploiting prices,” said Jane Magero, a farmer.

A maize trader Edith Omari said the drop in prices is due to the increased supply of maize from suppliers.

“Most farmers are selling their maize to raise school fees. We dropped the prices due to the increased supply of maize,” said Ms Omari.

They were speaking at Daraja Mbili market on Monday morning.
