A section of farmers in Uasin Gishu County on Tuesday held demonstrations over lack of fertilizer at the Eldoret National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot.
The farmers said they are worried that they might be forced to plant late following delay by the national government to avail subsidised fertilizers to them.
Led by Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) Director Kipkorir Menjo, they said the delay was likely to destabilise this year's farming plans.
Menjo said the government had promised to avail the fertilizers before the end of February, but up to now only a small portion has arrived and has already been distributed, leaving empty silos.
Menjo said the farmers have been queuing at NCPB depot since Friday but have not received the fertilizer.
"What is happening? We have already been told that the fertilizer arrived at the port (Mombasa), why the delay yet the farming season is here?" he posed.
"We need almost 200,000 bags here in Uasin Gishu alone but only about 12,000 bags of subsidized fertilizers have arrived at the Edoret NCPB which can only satisfy a few cooperative societies," he lamented.
