Maize farmers in North Rift region are targeting the export market due to attractive prices even as the Cereals Growers Association warns shortages due to low yield this season.

Jackson Lagat, a farmer from Moiben area said the farmers will store their produce until next year when there will be a high demand in the market.

"Most farmers are ready to hoard the crop until March next year when the prices will be high in the East African community market", he said.

Lagat added that East African community market offers more for a 90kg of maize unlike what the government offers.

He noted that what the farmers have been offered in the government won't be profitable.

The government promised to buy maize from farmers at Sh3,200 per a 90kg.

But, the farmers demanded that the price should be raised to Sh4,000 which the government declined.
