The Kiambu County government has started donating crop seed valued at Sh21 million to enhance farming activities and boost food production in the area.
According to the County Agriculture Department, they have already set aside over 48 tons of maize and 7 tons of green grams which will be shared by farmers in all sub-counties.
Speaking on Saturday in Ruiru area Governor Ferdinand Waititu said they want to double up the production by double-digits compared to the last season.
“We cannot keep on practicing farming in the way we have been used to, this time around we must think of how we can generate most produce, enough for ourselves and even more for sale”, he said.
The improved and early maturing seeds have been fully funded by the county and are expected to reap huge returns, projected to the tune of Sh200 million if the season does well in the area.
“The initial investment in this project might seem high but the profits are going to be even higher. In the event it is not successful, farmers can still plough back Sh100 million,” noted the county boss.
Waititu also confirmed that the county is in the process of purchasing adequate fertilizers, saying the supply will be done soon.
He urged the farmers to take advantage of the farm inputs offer and maximize their efforts in farming activities by increasing their acreages for maximum food production.
