Farmers in Garissa County are counting losses after River Tana burst its banks and flooded farms located near the river.

Garissa county commissioner James Kianda said irrigation farmers along the river were affected by the floods which destroyed their crops and their farms which are submerged in water.

Mr. Kianda said irrigation farmers along the river Tana upstream in Balambala down to Ijara in the south have been affected as most of their farms have been swamped by the raging floods.

The county commissioner said the government was assessing the damage to the farms planning on how best to assist the affected farmers to get back on their foot after the rains recede.

“We expect the ongoing rains to persist. We have instructed our chiefs and their assistants in areas prone to flooding to advise the residents to remain alert and be ready to move out if the need arises,” said Kianda.

He called on the area residents to heed warnings and move to higher grounds so they are not caught by floods.

Mr Kianda further said that roads in Balambala, Lagdera, Dadaab and Ijara sub-counties have been badly damaged.

He advised motorist using the mentioned roads to seek advice before embarking on their journeys to avoid getting stuck in the mud.
