Livestock farmers in Gatundu North sub-county, Kiambu County have been warned against practicing in-breeding for them to be guaranteed of healthy and highly productive yields. Speaking to farmers at Gakoe the sub-county’s Livestock Extension Officer Martin Rugano noted that many local livestock farmers were not realizing profitable outcomes from their farming projects because they fail to control inter-breeding. “Naturally, even among human beings, in-breeding is a curse that is manifested with poor breeds and that means poor products. Farmers should value the art of controlling inter-breeding among their livestock and poultry farming to realize good returns,” said officer Rugano added that one cannot keep on breeding father or son to daughter or brother and so on and expect to maintain a healthy and productive stock. According to the livestock farming expert, farmers should co-operate with other farmers in areas around their farms or outside the sub-county to acquire new and disease resistant breeds that are able to add value to their current and future breeding and production. He further advised both large and small-scale farmers in the area to form education and information sharing forums to enhance their livestock farming and management skills which will go a long way in enhancing production. “Farmers should always strive to forming education and information sharing forums since with such, they will notice a very big difference in their farming projects,’’ added Rugano.
