Kisii County Livestock officer Eric Nyamweya has urged farmers from the county to venture in pig keeping as an alternative to the current farming trends they have.
Addressing the Livestock farmers in Suneka sub-county, Nyamweya said that the climate in Kisii is favourable for pig keeping and therefore, urged the to embrace such saying that it will earn them an extra income.
The officer said that keeping small numbers of pigs between five and 20 is easy and will minimise the cost of feeding the animals and will not be hectic to them.
“The pig keeping has become popular in most communities and most farmers have succeeded in rearing pigs for commercial purposes, therefore this will be a good opportunity for the farmers to take advantage of the fast growing pig markets,” said Nyamweya.
He added that the demand for pork meat Is growing day by day adding that in Kisii there are few farmers who rear pigs and therefore having many farmers venturing into the business will be a game changer in the business.
“If farmers venture in pig rearing, then definitely they will be selling the pigs to the local butcheries and ordinary people who will be having big events some will even sell their pigs to teachers at local schools while others will be able to sell to other bordering counties,” said Nyamweya.
Pig keeping is rear especially in Kisii County for most farmers fear handling pigs due to their beliefs, being that most people from there are Seventh Day Adventists who see pigs as an unclean animal and the hectic job involved in taking care of them.
