Farmers in Kisumu County have been urged to embrace growing of sorghum, for sufficient food supply.
Agriculture CeC Henry Obade said the crop if grown as advised, will ease the pressure on maize.
“Famers must embrace diversity in their farms, total dependence on maize is a contributing factor to the current acute maize shortage,” said the County Executive.
He said his office in conjunction with The Directorate of Agriculture was conducting a sorghum awareness campaign, in the county.
"This initiative aims to enlighten farmers on how to grow the crop, and other subsistence crops like cassava and yams,'' Obade said, Tuesday.
The CeC also asked farmers to be on guard and help the county government to battle army-worm menace, since the pests were destructive and could reduce farm yields by 20-30 per cent.
“The county government has purchased an effective insecticide Engeo 247SC to control the caterpillars,” affirmed Obade.
