Farmers in Uasin Gishu county have given the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) one-week ultimatum to pay them their dues or face unspecified consequences.
Led by Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) director Kipkorir Arap Menjo, the farmers said they are yet to be paid over Sh3 billion for the maize supplied to the NCPB.
"We are demanding the National government through the Ministry of Agriculture to pay us our dues with immediate effect. It is sad that some of us have not been paid in the last two weeks yet we delivered maize," said Menjo at the Eldoret NCPB depot, Monday.
"How will they expect us to plant our crop. We call upon cabinet secretary for Agriculture Mwangi Kiunjuri to intervene for us to be paid," he added.
The farmers also asked NCPB to supply maize in their stores to hunger-stricken areas to create space for other farmers to deliver their products for purchase.
"We call upon the Eldoret NCPB depot to continue purchasing maize from farmers and should refrain from referring us to other depots since we don't have funds for the same," he said.
