Farmers in Uasin Gishu demanded that the national government ensures there is sufficient supply of subsidized fertilizers.
Led by the Kenya Farmers Association(KFA) Uasin Gishu director Kipkorir Arap Menjo, the farmers lamented that the current amount of fertilizer allocated for the North Rift region was not sufficient.
This is after it emerged that North Rift region will only get about 582,000 bags of subsidized fertilizer for this planting season.
"Demand for the fertilizer in this region is at least 1.4 million bags and what we have been allocated is not even half of that. How does the government expect farmers to share the one allocated bags? posed Menjo.
"If the government will not solve this issues, the country will be food insecure since food shortage is caused by lack of fertilizers. For the country to be food secure farmers should be given first priority," he added.
The farmers further challenged the government to fast-track the process of submitting the supplementary budget to Parliament so as to get funds to pay farmers who delivered their maize to National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
"It's sad that farmers who delivered their maize two months ago have not been paid yet they depend on the amount for them to start planting. The National government should do something to save farmers from this mess," noted Menjo.
