Farmers in Nakuru County are minting money from selling kales and spinach seedlings to potential farmers following the onset of the heavy rains.
Jane Muthoni, farmer from the area cited that she has been making at least Sh3,000 everyday for the last one week from selling spinach seedlings to farmers who were willing to plant them.
“I prepared my seedbeds in April and opted to sell the stems from the nursery bed at Sh10 each. Farmers are buying as much as 100 stems per seller, yielding a great profit for me,” cited Muthoni.
A mother farmer from the area Josephine Njeri, who has been selling Sukumawiki stems cited that she has been targeting farmers visiting her tree nursery located within Nakuru town.
“Many have been buying the stems as they do not want to prepare their own nursery beds. We are forced to transport them from Molo to the main market every day but we still make at least Sh2,000 on a bad day,” said Njeri.
Peter Njoroge who is also another farmer said that he had turned into selling lettuce after many people expressed interest in planting them.
“Many of our clients have now gone into professional farming which has created a huge demand for seedlings. I have decided to venture into selling the seedlings during every rainy season. The amount I get out of this business is fairly enough for me to pay my rent and feed my family,” said Njoroge.
