The farmers through their leader Elijah Owino said the hippos make seasonal appearances, particularly during the rainy season when the water level in river Nyando rises and crops are maturing.

"The hippos have been seen invading the farms and particularly during rainy seasons like now when the water level in the river is high," Owino said on Wednesday

"Every time they invade a farm, we can trace foot marks as they came out of the river."

The village administrator, Wilson Oula, said they had informed KWS concerning the matter.

"We reported the matter to KWS officers in 2013," he said adding that their efforts to scare the animals were fruitless.

The animals, he said destroy crops.
