Farmers in Kisii County have accused fertilizers sellers for hiking prices.
The farmers who are currently purchasing fertilisers asked the sellers to be fair.
"Kisii region has been receiving rains for the last two weeks now. We are in a hurry to plant because the early the planting, the more yields we will get," said Ong'ang'a Osoro.
Vincent Nyamosi, another farmer accused traders for hiking fertilizer prices.
"We are forced to pay over Sh2,500 for a 50 kilogram of fertilizer which used to be between Sh2,000 to Sh2,200 before the planting season. The national and county governments should intervene so that the traders can charge reasonable prices for us to buy fertilizers for planting," said Mr Nyamosi.
He said if the prices will continue hiking, most farmers are likely to miss planting in time.
"If fertilizer prices will not drop most farmers are likely to be affected because they will miss planting in time hence there will be poor yields. Farmers should also be vigilant so that they don't be conned by brokers," he added.
A trader Bonface Onchego urged the farmers to ensure they buy fertilizers from retail shops directly and avoid buying from local kiosks.
"Kiosk owners are the ones to blame for the hiked prices. 50 kilogram of fertilizer retails at Sh2,200 at a retail shop and this may increase when local kiosks sells to farmers at the village level," he said
The growers were speaking in Kisii town on Thursday.
