Chairman of the Prudent Scouts Group in Naivasha John Mwaura has said that they have ventured in rearing rabbit for its urine which, according to him, is well paying.
Farmers in Naivasha have ventured into rabbit keeping with the aim of selling their urine claiming that it is fetching high prices besides selling its meat.
Mwaura said that a litre of rabbit urine costs Sh100 with farmers harvesting at least 200 litres every week.
“With the increased demand for rabbit meat we also found out that its urine can be of great use and a ways to earn extra income. We did enough research for rabbit urine and found out that it can be used for making organic fertilisers which is now very popular with the local farmers,” said Mwaura adding that the urine used as manure is clean and affordable.
Mwaura revealed that they had started tapping the fertiliser in large amounts with an aim of selling the liquid to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
“We also intend to start making our own fertiliser and selling it to farmers as it will fetch more cash,” said Mwaura adding that the group has 73 rabbits so far.
Joseph Irungu, another farmer, said that apart from selling pellets and few vegetables, rabbit keeping has turned to be his greatest hobby claiming that he earns a lot of money from it.
He cited that they intend to sell the foliar fertiliser to local agro-vets “We hope to sell a litre of the fertiliser for at least Sh1,000 in the near future. This money will be a huge profit and we will also be able to earn a comfortable living,” added Irungu.
