More than a hundred farmers from Naivasha Sub County have rejected compensation terms between them and the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco).
The compensation was over the construction of a power line from Loiyangalani in Turkana to Suswa in Naivasha.
Speaking at Naivasha Town on Monday, the farmers drawn from Karai to Nyamathi accused the company of not involving them when drafting the compensation terms.
“We were not involved in the compensation agreements with Ketraco. We were given little for our land and the money can hardly by land,” said David Karanja, a farmer affected by the project.
The farmers allege that they received a raw deal in compensation of their land and accuse the firm of not following the agreed procedures of compensation being agreed between them.
“The company drafted its terms of compensation without our involvement thereby denying us the power to negotiate,” said Paul Kuria.
The farmers received support from Nakuru County Assembly majority leader Samuel Waithuki who said fresh review on the compensation should been done.
The MCA said that transparency should be carried when providing the compensation to avoid disillusionment among the farmers.
He urged the company to involve all stakeholders in drafting the compensation terms to strike a lasting solution.
