Eldoret farmers on Wednesday were forced to scramble for the topdressing fertilizer at the region’s National Cereals and Produce Board.
The angry farmers complained over the move by the cereals board to give each of them 20bags of fertiliser while others required more.
“There is inadequate fertilizer. I need 100 bags for my farm. Now I can’t have even 30.What is wrong with these people?” lamented Josphat Boen, a farmer.
The farmers seemed convinced that the shortage was being caused by corruption and underhand deals at the board.
Addressing the press in his office, the NCPB North Rift regional manager, Jonah Marindich refuted the claims. He said fairness and equality was the main reason for the limited disbursement.
He said there are no corrupt deals going on at the board.
“There will be enough fertilizer for everyone but we cannot give 100 bags to anyone. That will be an unfair move on our part,” said Marindich.
He further assured farmers that there was more fertilizer on the way coming adding no interested farmer would miss out on the disbursement.
“We have 6,340 bags on the way from Mombasa. We also have the Mavuno fertiliser for topdressing. Farmers therefore have no cause for alarm,” he noted.
He further advised farmers to put up with the disbursement pattern because farmers all over the country are receiving almost the same quantity.
