Watermelon farmers in Kiserian and Marigat have incurred huge losses due to lack of direct link to the market even after registering a bumper harvest.

Reports from the farmers show that their produce is rotting in the farm while farmers are waiting in vain for buyers.

The farmers further decried a situation where a group of brokers have taken charge of the entire business, pilfering farmers off their hard earned harvests

The middlemen exploit the farmers by buying their produce at very low prices because of their desperation to get money out of their harvests.

The brokers reportedly buy eight tones of watermelons between Sh40, 000 and Sh50, 000. The same previously went for between Sh150, 000 and Sh200, 000.
