Resource challenged farmers in Kisumu County are set to benefit from a consortium of fertilizers worth Sh16.1 million for planting and top dressing that has been purchased by the county government.

Governor Jack Ranguma said certified seeds have also been purchased and will be distributed free to the vulnerable groups.

Ranguma said he is keen on enhancing food security and increase the income of farmers in the county.

He said under the ‘County accelerated agricultural inputs access programme his government will promote good agricultural practices for improved productivity.

Speaking during the flagging off of the consignment on Friday, Mr Ranguma said the targeted vulnerable group has been identified in the seven sub counties.

He said the county government is liaising with agricultural extension officers to be able to distribute the fertilizers and seeds without any discrimination.

Ranguma urged able farmers to take advantage of subsidized fertilizers and seeds from the National Cereal and Produce Board depots in the county to improve the quality of their produce.

“The County Government has opened satellite depot stores in Pap-Onditi, Nyakach, Ahero, Nyando, Kajulu, Kisumu East and Kombewa in Seme sub counties to enable farmers get fertilizers at subsidized rates from the NCPB and I urge our local farmers to form co-operatives which will enable them maximize on their profits,” said Ranguma.
