Uasin Gishu farmers who have not vaccinated their animals against Rift Valley Fever disease have been urged to do so immediately owing to the ongoing heavy rains.
Speaking in his office on Wednesday, the CeC in charge of Agriculture and Livestock Cyril Cheruiyot said despite the fact that Uasin Gishu County started the vaccination exercise some two weeks ago, only a few farmers have presented their animals for vaccination.
“I urge farmers in the county to bring their animals for vaccination against this deadly disease whose prevalence is high during rainy season, failure to which they risk losing their animals,” he said.
He said the exercise was free since it has been catered for through the Ministry of Agriculture and farmers have nothing to worry about but take their animals for vaccination.
“We are targeting the most prevalent areas such as Ngenyilel, Turbo and Kesses which both are in Uasin Gishu county and I plead with farmers from those areas to bring their animals for vaccination, since the El Nino rains have started and their animals might easily be affected by the disease,” he said
He added that the county through the Ministry of Agriculture set aside Sh4 million for the Rift valley Fever vaccination which is underway.
“The vaccination is being conducted in cattle dips where farmers spray their cows against ticks and I urge farmers to present their animals for vaccination,” he added
