Farmers from Machakos County fear for harvesting 'nothing' despite the ongoing heavy and prolonged rains due to a swarm of army worms which have invaded their crops.
The locals urged Machakos and national governments to do everything possible so as to provide them with pesticides for controlling the worms.
Malonza Muoki, a farmer in Masinga decried that the farmers used a lot of money to buy seeds for planting, did all the necessary to ensure good yields, but their efforts are going down the drain due to the worm infestation.
"We won't harvest anything, hunger is looming if nothing will be done to salvage the remaining produce in our farms," Muoki said.
The farmers spoke to this writer at Masinga in Machakos County on Sunday.
They said local leaders had remained silent about the issue yet the situation was the same in the rest of the sub counties.
"We thought our leaders would offer us a solution to this menace, don't they have farms as well. If our crops fail, we will be at the mercies of well wishers and relief food," said Nguluni Market chairman Dominic Mwitik.
The farmers now want the two governments to take the matter with seriousness it deserves and save them from imminent hunger.
