Farmers drawn from Kisii South sub-county have been called upon to adapt to exotic breeds when keeping livestock to increase their income.
Speaking while visiting a number of farmers from the area, Kisii South agriculture officer Julius Nyandoro said most farmers in the area are still keeping hundreds of livestock despite their low productivity and called upon them to reduce the numbers of the animals and adopt the exotic breeds.
“We will be going round to motivate our farmers with a number of educational tips which will see them easily adapt to dairy farming that will give them good income,” he added.
The office added that the few who have already started keeping the exotic breeds are now smiling all their way to the bank and observed that a mature cow has the capacity to produce over 30 liters of milk per day if well managed.
Nyandoro asked the farmers to provide their animals with a balanced diet so that they can produce more.
“Farmers should ensure they feed their animals with 25 percent proteins, 75 percent carbohydrates and 5 percent salt,” he said.
He also advised asked farmers to seek for technical advice from the livestock officers on how to improve the breeds of their animals and get maximum profits from the animals.
