Governor John Nyagarama's wife has urged Nyamira County farmers to ditch maize farming and start farming faster growing crops.
The county first lady encouraged the farmers to start farming avocado, tissue culture banana, bee-keeping, vegetables, fish farming and also poultry, since maize farming was not profitable as it used to be in the past.
"Maize farming is not as it used to be, and I urge farmers to look for other types of farming that will bring profit to them. The maize lethal necrosis disease that has hit this county has highly contributed to the poor harvests that most of the farmers here have witnessed,” said Naomi.

She went ahead to say that the County Government had recruited a number of extension officers to help the farmers with all kinds of information and assistance, and also is in the process of distributing hybrid seeds, tissue culture banana suckers to all the farmers in the county.
“We are also going to ensure that bamboo trees are distributed to all the farmers," added Naomi.
Assembly Speaker Joash Nyamoko said that the county government was about to launch phase 2 of the street lights project in all the major towns in the county.
“As promised, we are going to launch phase two of street light project by the end of this month in all the major town,” said Nyamoko.
