Nakuru County Deputy Agricultural Commissioner Sarah Kiprono has urged farmers in the county to venture into new crops farming.
According to Kiprono this will help to counter attack climatic and weather challenges facing the agricultural sector and at the same time help to boost food security and agribusiness in the region.
“We should consider carrying out research and market surveys on new crops in order to overcome climate and weather challenges. New cash crops will help us tackle food insecurity problems as well as diversifying agribusiness ventures,’’ said Kiprono.
She advised Nakuru farmers to consider introducing cash crops like soybeans, traditional vegetables, fruits, cassava, sweet potatoes and castor oil which can sustain both harsh and conducive climatic conditions.
She said that most local farmers were experiencing loses due to overreliance on one type of crop.
Kiprono was speaking during an Agricultural Diversity and Agribusiness workshop at the Nakuru Agricultural Training Centre in Nakuru town.
