Farmers have been urged to insure their crops and livestock against natural disasters such as drought and diseases.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett said this will ensure farmers are compensated in case they incur losses. "Farmers should safeguard themselves against eventualities caused by climate change  through  insuring their crops and livestock," he said in Eldoret town on Friday."Since farmers borrow loans from financial institutions it is imperative that the risk of securing loans is safeguarded through insurance schemes," he added.He, however, said that agricultural innovations are vital in transforming agriculture into viable ventures. "The innovations helps to come up with different varieties of crops that thrive well under different climatic conditions this enabling farmers earn decent income," noted Bett."The Ministry will continue to support financially relevant research in order to ensure better plant varieties that can help in attaining food security," he added He advised farmers to embrace value addition to their products for them to get more income.
