Dairy farmers in Nakuru North have been told to take precautionary steps and store fodder feeds for their cattle.
Nakuru County Agricultural officer, Karanja Mwangi says that there is need for dairy farmers to store enough feeds to cushion them from uncertainty of weather patterns that have been changing over the last quarter of this year.
“Weather patterns are dynamic and farmers should prepare them in case the weather patterns change,” said Karanja.
Speaking on Tuesday at Ndungiri shopping centre in Kabazi Ward during an agricultural tour, Karanja urged farmers to step up their efforts in storing animal feeds.
“Farmers should seize the abundance of fodder available and store it for future use,” said Karanja.
He urged farmers to practice the best animal husbandry to maximise profits.
“Farmers need to look after their animals in a professional way to fetch high gains. Deworming is necessary to increase chances of maximising profit,” said Karanja.
He called on traders transporting cattle from one area to another to a bid to the laid out quarantine regulations.
“Traders transporting cattle from one area to another must seek advice from my office to avoid spreading diseases,” said Karanja.
He said that many diseases affecting the livestock could be avoided if traders abide by the laws governing quarantines.
