Kisii farmers have been urged to test their soils to ascertain the level of acidity or alkalinity of their soils before purchasing fertilizers.
Anne Okenyuri from the ministry of agriculture Kisii town was speaking, following the sudden rush by farmers to buy fertilizers after the rains.
She said fertilizers was to be applied in accordance to the pH of the soil.
“Continued use of fertilizers leads to the acidity of the soil. Some farmers go on using fertilizers with low Ph which only leads to more acidity in the soil,” said Okenyuri.
She urged the farmers to seek help at the County’s ministry of agriculture offices.
She said a large part of the county’s soil was acidic and continuous use of fertilizers will lead to more acidity.
“Ensure you know your soil Ph before buying fertilizers to avoid suffering consequences of ignorance which can be very expensive,” She said.
