Livestock farmers in Kiambu have been encouraged to vaccinate their cattle regularly in efforts to keep cattle diseases at bay.
County executive for Agriculture and Livestock Dr Monica Waiganjo while opening a cattle vaccination exercise at Ngoliba Trading Centre in Thika Sub County on Saturday said that cattle diseases remain a threat to livestock farming.
Dr Waiganjo noted that though there are no cases of cattle disease that have been reported it was important for farmers to ensure that their livestock are vaccinated.
She stated that the county government has organized for free vaccination exercise across the county to ensure that cattle’s are vaccinated against diseases like foot and mouth, Anthrax, Rift valley and Lumpy skin.
“We have deployed livestock extension officers in every ward to sensitize livestock farmers on the need for them to vaccinate their cattle,” she said.
Dr Waiganjo said that the extension officers will also educate farmers on proper ways of livestock farming.
The Agriculture and Livestock minister said that the county government has put in place measures to promote livestock farming.
He urged farmers to invest more in livestock saying that the county will help them get market for their products.
She also encouraged farers to embrace agri-business saying it will help them earn profits for their various farming.
She said that the county government will soon establish a greenhouse in every ward with aim of encouraging farming among locals.
