Kisii farmers have called upon the county government to provide subsidised fertilisers to farmers.
Raising their concerns on Saturday in Kisii, the farmers claimed fertilisers in the market is expensive, forcing most customers to shy from buying them.
“We want the county government to come in and offer cheap fertilisers. Most of us are small scale farmers who yield little and thus buying them from local retailers is expensive,” said Benjamin Nyagarama.
They claim local retailers are selling fertilisers expensivelly, especially now that demand is high.
“The prices of fertilisers are high now since demand is high, which makes it very expensive to the farmers,” said Alice Onderi.
Some farmers say that they ‘hear’ there is subsidised fertiliser from the county government, but they have never been able to access them.
“I once heard of subsidised fertilisers offered by the county government, but on following it up, I was not able to access the same. We suffer a lot from buying very expensive fertilisers yet the county government has the ability to buy them in surplus and sell them at cheaper price to the farmers,” added Joshua Makori.
