The Executive Director of the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Co-ordination Board, Fazul Mahamed, has resigned from office.
However, Fazul has not disclosed the reasons for his resignation.
This comes barely few months after the board's move to deregister major NGOs that are operating in Kenya a good number of them being owned by famous politicians and prominent people.
Fazul's academic qualifications have also been a subject undermining his term as the board's boss and his resignation has therefore caused a big online debate between Kenyans.
In a resignation letter, Fazul stated that his resignation will take effect on the first day of May this year.“I wish to sincerely thank the Board of Directors for the invaluable opportunities extended and I commit to effecting an expedient and smooth transition,” reads his letter.
On early December last year, the Employment and Labour Relations Court issued orders preventing the government from extending his term of office after activist Okiya Omtatah filed a petition against the Interior CS Fred Matiang’i for failing to start by July 24 last year, the process of re-appointing or replacing Mahamed.
However, in the orders issued by Justice Hellen Wasilwa, the interior cabinet secretary should not re-appoint Fazul or replace him due to pending inter-parties hearing of the cases.In the same order, Mohamed was also denied access to accessing offices of the NGO Coordination Board and carrying out any functions of the body.It is however interesting to note that Fazul described his three years in office as pure excitement and joy.
