Photo/Pristone MambiliNakuru County Human Rights defenders, under the umbrela National Coalition for Human Rights Defenders Kenya, condemned the raid on Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the Africa Centre for Open Governance (AfriCOG) by government agencies.
In a press statement on Thursday, the civil society groups from Nakuru condemned Non-Governmental Organization Board CEO Fazul Mohammed for the 'attack'.
“The attempts by the NGO coordination Board to restrict civil space contravenes the fundamental human rights and freedom of association as per article 36 of the constitution. AfriCOG is registered under the companies act therefore the NGO coordination Board has no mandate over it,” a statement from the group said.
On his part Masese Kemunche from Centre from enhancing Democracy and Good Governance-CEDGG based in Nakuru called on the NGO coordination board to desist from exercising powers they do not have.
According to Masese, the Board CEO Fazul Mohammed is overstepping the mandate given to him.
Masese was however quick to commend acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr.Fred Matiang’i for coming to the defence of the NGOs.
