Residents of a village in Baringo are a worried lot after they experienced 'earthquakes' since the start of heavy rains.
Marigat residents said there has been 'a series of earth tremors in the past one week', the standard said.
Many now fear a volcanic eruption might take place.
“The tremors have happened repeatedly since the beginning of this month. People are now living in fears because we do not know when the next attack will happen,” a resident told the paper.
The tremors are reportedly happening at night.
Similar events took place at Suswa and caused a section of the Mai Mahiu-Narok road to sink.
Geologists warn that there are fault lines that are active along the Rift Valley.
They say the earth in the region is 'moving'.
“The cause could be active fault lines along the rift. The heavy rains may have contributed to the effect that is being experienced in this area,” Mercy Cheburet, a geologist, she said.
The Rift Valley and sites like the Menengai Crater and Longonot were created as a result of volcanic forces.
Residents now fear these forces might recur and cause destruction to their lives.
